Welcome to The Knecht Cup Regatta

The Knecht Cup Regatta is one of the premier highlights of the collegiate spring rowing season, carrying forward a rich tradition of athletic excellence, inclusion, and family legacy on the historic Cooper River in Camden County, New Jersey.

The regatta was founded in 1999 by legendary Villanova University rowing coach Jack St. Clair to honor the life and monumental impact of William J. “Bill” Knecht. An Olympic gold medalist (1964, Men’s Eight) and American Rowing Hall of Fame inductee, Bill’s devotion to the sport extended far beyond his own competitive career on the water. He was a visionary who single-handedly developed the world-class rowing course on the Cooper River and founded the Cooper River Rowing Association.

Beyond building physical courses, Bill was a foundational architect of modern rowing governance. He served as the President of the National Association of Amateur Oarsmen (NAAO) and was a key founder of the National Rowing Foundation. Crucially, his leadership helped pave the way for the creation of USRowing, the sport’s national governing body. On the global stage, Bill was the American delegate to FISA (the World Rowing Federation) and earned the distinction of being the only American to serve on the FISA Umpiring Commission for two consecutive decades, culminating in his role as an Olympic judge at the 1992 Summer Olympics.

From its inception as a regional tribute, the event has grown into a massive national weekend of competition. Today, the Knecht Cup hosts more than 80 collegiate rowing programs from across the United States. True to Bill Knecht’s lifelong spirit of expanding access to the sport, the regatta brings together a unique and diverse field, creating a stage where NCAA Division I, II, and III universities compete alongside top-tier collegiate club programs and elite adaptive athletes in a prominent Paralympic racing program.

Now directed by Bill’s daughter, Laura Knecht Blanche, the Knecht Cup remains a deeply personal family endeavor. Today, the third generation of the Knecht family can be found working the docks, managing race-day operations, and even rowing out on the water themselves.
